Trust

It’s a vitally important word when you are looking to buy any high-ticket item, but doubly so when that item is a diamond engagement ring – the symbol of your love and long-term commitment to each other.  It is one of the most significant, emotionally charged purchases you will make in your lifetime and it needs to be approached with care.  Make the wrong choice and it can put a damper on what should be the happiest of times for you both.  If you were looking to buy an expensive car wouldn’t you want to work with a bona fide dealer whom you trust?  After all, you are relying on his expertise and product knowledge to steer you in the right direction.  Similarly, when choosing your diamond engagement ring, you’ll want to be 100% certain of its overall quality and you’ll want to trust the diamond dealer to sell it to you at a fair market value.  You rely on his or her expertise to sell you a high-quality product that lives up to its description so that it is what it says it is.

When you start the initial search for that perfect engagement ring, you’ll doubtless go online first to see what’s out there – and you’ll be bombarded with countless advertisements from online retailers offering you tempting prices for something that looks like it is a quality product.  The internet is a vast and wonderful tool which can instantly open the world of shopping at the click of a mouse, but it’s buyer beware when it comes to diamond jewelry. How can you tell if you are getting the real thing? We’re not suggesting that you may be sold a fake – although that has undoubtedly happened – but we are saying that a reputable diamond dealer will have many years of experience in the jewelry business and will want to protect his name and integrity by treating you honestly.

GIA IF rating

GIA-TABLE-212x300 How to be sure you are buying a quality engagement ringWe’ll give you an example of how difficult it is for the layperson to check out the true value of an engagement ring. Supposing you are trying to decide between two different diamond rings. Unless you are a certified gemologist you will find it very difficult to tell the difference between an internally flawless diamond with a GIA IF * rating and one that is VVS1 (with very, very small inclusions, 1st degree) or even VVS2 (very, very small inclusions, 2nd degree.) The defects or inclusions may not even be readily visible through a jeweler’s loupe; to the naked, untrained eye there will be no discernable difference.  The same holds true of color grading; most people cannot tell the difference between stones which are two levels of color grading apart and yet the price differential can be significant. So how can you be sure you are getting what you pay for?  An online marketer can sell you an engagement ring that looks good, but you may not be able to tell if it is what it claims to be – and you’re getting it in the mail, so it’s not always easy to return.  Many couples have been misled by unscrupulous online marketers and have lived to regret a hasty purchase.

We recommend you take your time to find a trustworthy diamond dealer.  You should *request a GIA * report to verify your engagement* diamond *grade levels for cut, color, clarity and carat weight so you know you are getting the real thing; a reputable diamond dealer will guarantee that your diamond is genuine and that it matches the report.*In addition, it is now also a common practice for a GIA certified diamond, to have the matching report #, inscribed on the girdle of the diamond. The inscriptions is not visible to the naked eye.*
